Job Title: Executive Director

About Us:

The Pittsburgh Youth Philharmonic Orchestra (PYPO) is committed to fostering the talents of young musicians through exceptional musical experiences. Our programs provide a supportive community for youth to explore their passion for music through orchestral and band experiences, performances, and educational opportunities.  In existence for over thirty years, PYPO currently serves 500 students ranging from elementary through high school annually throughout the Western Pennsylvania region.  Students participate in five ensembles which span three levels: Overture, Intermezzo, and Philharmonic. Students also participate in festivals, summer camps, performances, and international concert tours which take place every three years.

Position Overview:

The Pittsburgh Youth Philharmonic Orchestra is looking for an Executive Director who will play a pivotal role in leading PYPO to new heights. Working closely with the Board of  Directors and staff, you will address organizational issues, oversee daily operations, fundraising, staffing, planning, community outreach, and general supervisory responsibilities. The Executive Director will work closely with staff and Board members to implement and manage the annual budget and to develop and grow the organization in order to ensure the fulfillment of our mission to foster a lifelong love of music and learning.  

Key Responsibilities:

The role of Executive Director is full-time with a flexible schedule.  Additionally, attendance at evening and weekend rehearsals/concerts is required during the season. The salary range is $45,000-$55,000 based on experience with the potential to earn more. The successful candidate will be required to obtain all appropriate clearances  within 6 months of employment. Position is available immediately.  

  • Strategic Leadership:

    • Collaborate with the Board of Directors to assess and address organizational issues and achieve strategic initiatives.

    • Provide vision and direction for program strategies and planning, aligning them with the organization's mission.

    • Plan, organize and direct the organization’s operations and programs.  

    • Develop an annual plan for all educational programs, special events, and explore new programs to support artistic and educational objectives.  

    • Develop and maintain a supportive, diverse, and engaged Board of Directors which includes recruitment, education, and collaboration with Board leadership.  

  • Staffing and Culture:

    • Identify and address staffing requirements for efficient operations.

    • Maintain a supportive and strong work culture that attracts and retains talent while driving the organization’s mission.

    • Communicate internally and externally with staff, families, and stakeholders to ensure they are kept informed of organizational plans, policies, and procedures. 

    • Recruit, coordinate and provide leadership to ensure appropriate support of all staff.  

    • Oversee day-to-day operations, human resources, fiscal management, and the execution of all music and educational programs. 

  • Finances:

    • Oversee and direct all fundraising and activities, including maintaining relationships with donors and foundation partners, and cultivating relationships and opportunities with both individuals and organizations.  

    • Develop, implement, and maintain consistent accounting policies, procedures, and reporting. Ensure compliance with non-profit requirements.

    • Lead all aspects of the grant and funding processes including researching, writing, submitting, reporting, ongoing engagement, and stewardship.  

  • Community Engagement:

    • Increase awareness by serving as the main spokesperson and liaison.

    • Engage with the PYPO community, including musicians, families, and donors.

    • Cultivate and maintain partnerships with the community for the purposes of recruitment, programming, and financial support.

  • Orchestra Management:

    • Coordinate and secure rehearsal and concert venues. 

    • Oversee all rehearsal and concert logistics.

  • Other duties as required.

Preferred Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher.  Preference will be given to candidates with degrees in business, arts administration, or management. 

  • Five or more years of organization management experience, preferably with nonprofits.

  • Strong experience in public relations, communications, and marketing/fundraising, including grant writing and management.

  • Experience with Microsoft Office, Google Suite, accounting software, donor management, and online ticketing software.  

  • Strong accounting skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Proven success working with a Board of Directors and nonprofit management.

  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.

  • Background in music or familiarity with the workings of an orchestra.

  • Comfort engaging with the PYPO community of musicians, families, and donors, and advocating on behalf of the organization.

  • Ability to serve as an ambassador for the organization.
