UPCOMING AUDITION DATES –

2020-2021 Season Audition Dates for Prelude Strings, Prelude Band and Philharmonic Woodwinds/Brass/Percussion by VIDEO

To audition for the season, please contact our Executive Director, Erika Pierce at staff@pypo.org.  We only have room for certain instruments in our ensembles.

Audition Fee:  $25 (plus a $1.75 registration fee)*
*Please note: some audition requirements have changed from previous seasons, please review the audition requirements carefully.

Overture Strings and Overture Band  – No audition is required.

HOW TO REGISTER FOR AN AUDITION

**Please note – Auditions this season will be held by video.

1. Applicant must register below.  The audition registration fee is $25 plus a service fee of $1.75.

2. The 2020-2021 Season Auditions will be held by video.  Applicants will be sent a link in which to submit audition videos after registration.  Videos will be due by the end of the day on September 15, 2020, but may be submitted anytime prior to that date.

3. Videos will be recorded by the applicant and will consist of scales and the required solos/exerpts as listed in our audition requirements, please visit: http://www.pypo.org/auditions/

4. Applicants should upload their audition video to Youtube as unlisted.  This Youtube link will be submitted to the PYPO audition committee for review.

5. Students will be notified of acceptance by September 17th.  The first rehearsal is on September 19, 2020 .

6. There are no piano-only auditions for PYPO Philharmonic or Prelude Orchestra. Interested musicians must first audition and be accepted on another instrument.

PHILHARMONIC AUDITION REQUIREMENTS (Updated 8/10/20):

PMEA required solos (as referenced below) can be found HERE on page 3.  Required scales can be found HERE

SCALE & SOLO REQUIREMENTS:

STRINGS

Violin: 3 octave scales (memorized): A Major, C Major, and E-flat Major, a solo of choice (solo for acceptance into Philharmonic must be of PMEA level) and the VIOLIN EXCERPTS POSTED HERE.

Viola & Cello: 2 or 3 octave scales (memorized):  D Major, E-flat Major, and A Major, a solo of choice (solo for acceptance into Philharmonic must be of PMEA level) and the VIOLA/CELLO EXCERPTS POSTED HERE

String Bass:
2 octave scales (memorized): F Major, C Major, and A Major, a solo of choice (solo for acceptance into Philharmonic must be of PMEA level) and the BASS EXCERPTS POSTED HERE

WOODWINDS:
PMEA required solo for 2020-2021 and the scales listed below:

Scales:
          Flute*, Oboe:  B-flat Major, C Major, D Major
          Bassoon: F Major, C Major, D Major
          Clarinet: F Major, D Major, E Major
          Saxophones: G Major, A Major, B-flat Major
Students must play all scales listed for their instrument.  All scales must be memorized.

*Flutes: Must also audition on Piccolo. 3 octave chromatic scale starting on B-flat, and Solo: Sonata in F for Flute and Piano (first mvmt. – Allegro), Telemann.

BRASS: PMEA required solo for 2020-2021 and the scales listed below:

Scales:
          French Horns: C Major, G Major, A Major
          Trumpet: C Major, D Major, E Major
          Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba:  B-flat Major, C Major, D Major
Students must play all scales listed for their instrument.  All scales must be memorized.


Percussion:
Scales (memorized): D Major, E-flat Major, and A Major, Snare solo or Étude of choice, Timpani exercise or solo, plus Bell or Xylophone solo.

 

Note: The audition requirements listed are the minimum required for entrance.  Being able to meet these requirements will not guarantee an applicant’s acceptance.

Our music staff will select applicants who can play at the level of students currently in each ensemble. The different level of the ensembles are intended to help each student grow at his or her own pace as a player and musician. Students will be reviewed by the adjudication panel and Music Director for the ensemble that will best challenge each student.

PYPO PRELUDE ENSEMBLES (Intermediate Level:  Strings and Band Instruments)  Requirements updated 8/10/20

STRINGS:

First Violin:  2 or 3 octave scales (memorized): A Major, C Major, and E-flat Major scales,  Fantasia (The Boy Paganini) by Mollenhauer (first 40 measures only) AND one solo of choice (from Suzuki Book 4 or equivalent that demonstrates students are comfortable shifting and playing in higher positions).  All scales must be memorized.

Second Violin:  2 octave scales (memorized): A Major, C Major, and E-flat Major scales, Humoresque by Dvorak (with shifting), AND one solo of choice (from Suzuki Book 3 or equivalent).  All scales must be memorized.

Viola:  2 or 3 octave scales (memorized):  D Major, E-flat Major, and A Major scales, Humoresque by Dvorak (with shifting), AND one solo of choice (from Suzuki Book 3 or equivalent).  All scales must be memorized.

Cello:  2 or 3 octave scales (memorized):  D Major, E-flat Major, and A Major scales, La Cinquantaine, AND one solo of choice (from Suzuki Book 3 or equivalent).  All scales must be memorized.

Bass: 1 octave scales (memorized): F Major, C Major, and A Major scale, The Elephant by Saint-Saens, and one solo of choice from Suzuki Book 3 or equivalent..  All scales must be memorized.

WOODWINDS:

Solo:   Solo(s) that demonstrate legato and staccato playing from the solo or etude repertoire.

Scales:
          Flute, Oboe:  B-flat Major, C Major, D Major
          Bassoon: F Major, C Major, D Major
          Clarinet: F Major, D Major, E Major
          Saxophones: G Major, A Major, B-flat Major

OVERTURE REGISTRATION

No audition is required for admission into Overture Strings or Overture Band.  Students should have between 2 and 4 years of playing experience on their instrument.  If you are unsure if Overture Strings or Overture Band is a good fit for you, please contact the respective director:

Video Audition Procedure

1. Register for an audition (see links below or on the “Register for an Audition” tab.  You will be given a link after you register of where to submit your audition video.  We are only able to accept videos through this link.

2.  Be sure you work on the required scales, solos and/or excerpts as posted on the “Prelude Requirements” and “Philharmonic Requirements” tabs above.

3.  When you are ready to record your video, please follow the following requirements:  You must submit only ONE video that includes all of the scales and solos in the order listed below in ONE take. Do not stop the video at any time during the recording. (You may make multiple recordings and then send the best one)

4. In the video, we need to clearly see your face, both hands, your entire instrument, and your bow hold.

5.  At the beginning of the video, please say the following BEFORE you begin to play:
-First and Last name
-The Ensemble you are auditioning for: Prelude (Intermediate Level) or Philharmonic (Advanced Level)
-What instrument you are auditioning on (or the section you are auditioning for – violin 1 or 2)

5. Your audition material should be played in the following order:
1. Scales: (specific required scales as listed)
2. Solo(s) of Choice or required solo as specified in requirements
3. Excerpts as required by instrument/ensemble – please note: only Philharmonic strings have required excerpts.

5. Upload your final video to Youtube:

Please upload your file to Youtube as UNLISTED. Unlisted means your video will not come up in search results or on your channel. Only those who know the link can view it, and you can share the link with anyone. Copy the link and submit it in the questionnaire that you were sent by a link. We are unable to accept any videos by email.

6. Scan and upload a PDF of the sheet music.  You will attach this to your video submission.
