2017-2018 Season Audition Brochure

UPCOMING AUDITION DATES

FALL, 2017 (Full Season)*:
Saturday, September 30, 2017
Audition fee: $40

Mid-Season Auditions (Half Season)*:
Saturday, January 20, 2018
Audition Fee:  register before December 31—$35; register after January 1, 2018—$40

*All students who audition in September or January will be placed in the back of their respective sections for all ensembles and are not eligible for seating auditions for the remainder of the 2017-2018 season.

HOW TO REGISTER FOR AN AUDITION

1. Applicant must register online and reserve an audition appointment.

2. Auditions will last approximately ten minutes (Philharmonic flute and ALL percussion auditions are 20 minutes in length). Twenty-minute audition appointments are placed throughout the schedule. If a twenty-minute appointment is not available on your preferred date, please email staff@pypo.org.

3. For registration of multiple students, please click specific link below.

4. If you are unable to keep your audition appointment, email staff@pypo.org at least one week prior to your audition.

5. Please arrive at least 10 minutes prior to your audition appointment.

6. Auditions are held at Chartiers Valley Intermediate School, 2030 Swallow Hill Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15220.

7. There are no piano-only auditions for PYPO Philharmonic or Prelude Orchestra. Interested musicians must audition and be accepted on another instrument, performing piano pieces as literature and Music Director dictates.

Overture Strings Registration (NO AUDITION REQUIRED)
(Developing Level Strings)

PHILHARMONIC AUDITION REQUIREMENT
(Intermediate Level:  Strings and Band Instruments)

*Please provide extra copy of solo(s) for adjudicator.
*Sight reading is required in addition to the following scale & solo requirements.

SCALE & SOLO REQUIREMENTS:

Violin: 3 octave Major scales (memorized) up to 3 sharps / 3 flats. PMEA required solo for 2017-18 and a second solo of choice.

Viola & Cello: 2 or 3 octave Major scales (memorized) up to 3 sharps / 3 flats. PMEA required solo for 2017-18, and a second solo of choice.

String Bass:
 1 octave C, G, D, & F Major scales (memorized).  L’Éléphant from Carnival of the Animals (Saint Saëns), and a second solo of choice.


Woodwinds: 
2 octave Major scales up to 5 sharps / 5 flats, 3 octave chromatic scale and PMEA required solo for 2017-18. All scales must be memorized.

Flutes: Must also audition on Piccolo. 3 octave chromatic scale starting on B-flat, and Solo: Sonata in F for Flute and Piano (first mvmt. – Allegro), Telemann.

Brass: Major scales up to 4 sharps / 4 flats, 2 octave chromatic scale and PMEA required solo for 2017-18. All scales must be memorized.

Percussion: 
Scales up to 3 Sharps / 3 Flats C, F, G, B-flat, D, E-flat, A (memorized), Snare solo or Étude of choice, Timpani exercise or solo, plus Bell or Xylophone solo.

Note: The audition requirements listed are the minimum required for entrance and being able to meet these requirements will not guarantee an applicant’s acceptance.

Our music staff will select applicants who can play at the level of students currently in each ensemble. The different levels of the ensembles are intended to help each student grow at his or her own pace as a player and musician. Students will be reviewed by the adjudication panel and Music Director for the ensemble they feel will best challenge each student.

PRELUDE AUDITION REQUIREMENTS
(Intermediate Level:  Strings and Band Instruments)

Strings: C, G, D, A, F, B-flat, E-flat major scales
AND two solos from Suzuki Book 2 or equivalent. More advanced solos are encouraged. All scales must be memorized.
To be considered for first violin, all scales must be 2 octaves and at least one solo must demonstrate shifting proficiency.

Woodwinds: 1 octave chromatic scales plus:

  • Flute*, Oboe, Bassoon: E-flat, B-flat, F, C, G, D
  • B-flat Clarinet, B-flat Bass Clarinet, B-flat Tenor Sax: F, C, G, D, A, E
  • E-flat Alto & E-flat Baritone Saxophone: C, G, D, A, E, B  AND solo(s) that demonstrate legato and staccato playing from the solo or etude repertoire. All scales must be memorized.
    *If you have a piccolo, please bring to your audition and perform a scale.

Brass: 1 octave chromatic scales plus:

  • French Horn: B-flat, F, C, G, D, A
    (Chromatic Scale starts on middle C)
  • Trumpets & B-flat Treble Clef Baritone / Euphonium: F, C, G, D, A, E
    (Trumpet Chromatic Scale starts on D, bottom of staff)
  • Trombone, Bass Clef Baritone / Euphonium, Tuba: E-flat, B-flat, F, C, G, D
    (Trombone Chromatic Scale starts on second space C & Tuba starts on C two ledger lines below the staff)

    AND solo(s) that demonstrate legato and staccato playing from the solo or etude repertoire. All scales must be memorized.

Percussion: Scales up to 2 sharps / 2 flats C, F, G, B-flat, D
AND Snare solo or Étude of choice, plus Bell or Xylophone exercise or solo. All scales must be memorized.

OVERTURE REGISTRATION

No audition is required for admission into Overture Strings.  Students should have between 2 and 4 years of playing experience on their instrument.  If you are unsure if Overture Strings is a good fit for you, please contact the director, Christina Crivelli at ccrivelli@pypo.org.
