Stephen Flory is a percussionist and audio engineer from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Westminster College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education and recently received his Master’s of Music in Music Technology Degree from Southern Utah University.
Stephen has performed both throughout the United States and Europe with various ensembles. Currently he performs with the Pittsburgh Steeline at all Steelers events and home games as well as various regional community performances. Stephen also frequently performs throughout the Pittsburgh region at theaters and with various groups. Notable performances include the 2012 production of Susannah with the Undercroft Opera which was chosen as a finalist for the American Prize in Opera; Inuksuit performances in Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and Nashville; alongside country music greats such as Big & Rich, Montgomery Gentry, and Florida Georgia Line; and throughout Germany and Switzerland with the Pittsburgh Youth Philharmonic Orchestra.
As an educator, Stephen is active in the area as the owner and percussion instructor at Monroeville Music Lesson Center and as the Director of Percussion with the Pittsburgh Youth Philharmonic Orchestra. He is a Guest Lecturer at Grove City College teaching Marching Percussion. He also has extensive experience with audio engineering having mixed The Stapletons debut album “Ballads and Battles” and the Pittsburgh Youth Philharmonic Orchestra’s “2017-18 Season Greatest Hits” album. He enjoys writing music for podcasts and other media, and working in the technical side of theater production.
In 2013 Stephen helped start 1710 Percussion, which has been named the “Best Boutique Drum Company” three years in a row by the readers of DRUM! magazine. He uses their drums exclusively and works with the company. He also serves on the Board of Directors for Warrior Music Foundation, a nonprofit focused on serving veterans and their families as they deal with the complexities of PTSD by providing a venue for learning, healing and camaraderie using music lessons and therapy in both individual and group settings.
Stephen currently resides in North Versailles, PA where when not doing something music related he likes to bike, work on home improvement projects, and follow the NHL. He is a member of the D’Addario Education Collective, the Sabian Education Network, PMEA, the Percussive Arts Society, and Mu Phi Epsilon.
