Principal Player Expectations The principal player in each section of the Pittsburgh Youth Pops Orchestra is assigned by the Music Director. Principal players are chosen based on a variety of criteria ranging from musicianship to leadership skill. Specifically, a principal player must demonstrate these qualities: - High level of musicianship including technical skill, ensemble playing, and solo playing
- High level of organizational commitment demonstrated through attendance and by being on time for all orchestra rehearsals and concerts. Additional involvement beyond playing is a plus: this might include anything from helping with rehearsal set-up to recruiting new members.
- High level of preparedness for all rehearsals and performances
- Serve as an example of both musical accomplishment and organizational commitment to other section members
- Commitment to achieving good morale and raising the level of performance
- Responsible for covering music as much as possible when section members are absent. While each member of the orchestra is responsible for making music available in his or her absence, the section leader is ultimately responsible for good communication within the section, should know of all absences, and should be prepared to cover accordingly.
Once assigned, the principal position is held indefinitely until the Music Director or Principal Player expresses a desire to make a change.
