The Pittsburgh Youth Philharmonic String Ensemble (PYPSE) was established in the 2007-2008 season to provide young musicians with the opportunity to receive experience in a smaller, more focused ensemble environment.

Erika Pierce, PYPSE Conductor, has been leading the group since its inception. Ms. Pierce's extensive education and musical background, combined with her ability to cultivate a love of music in this age student, continues to allow this group to grow and prosper each year.

The chosen repertoire exposes the musicians to literature from both the classical and popular genres. The pieces selected are designed to help these budding musicians vastly improve their technical skills without having them strive beyond their capabilities.

  • Student musicians, grades 3 - 8 are chosen by audition in May from over 32 school districts in the Greater Pittsburgh area.
  • Tuition is under review for the 2010-2011 season / Audition Application Fee is $15.
  • Musicians are accepted through an audition process by appointment only. 2010-2011 season auditions are scheduled for May 15 and 16, 2010. Please see PYPSE Audition tab to review requirements and obtain PYPSE audition application.
  • PYPSE rehearsals are held on Saturdays from mid-October through early April, 10:00 AM to Noon, at Chartiers Valley Intermediate School located at 2030 Swallow Hill Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15220.
  • The Pittsburgh Youth Pops String Ensemble performs 3 - 4 concerts per season in the Western PA area
