The audition requirements listed on this application
are the minimum required for entrance and being able to meet
these requirements will not guarantee an applicant's acceptance.
Our music staff will select applicants who can
play at the level of students currently in each ensemble. The
different levels represented by the orchestra and ensemble
are intended to help each student grow at his or her own pace
as a player and musician. However, students exhibiting skills
above the current PYPO Prelude Ensemble will be reviewed on
a case-by-case basis by the adjudication panel and Music Director
for part-time, or full admission into the Pittsburgh Youth

PYPO or Prelude Application below. Send with $25 audition fee
P.O. Box 15675, Pittsburgh, PA 15244. Application must be received
by PYPO prior to scheduling an audition appointment.
2. A member of the PYPO staff
will contact you to schedule your audition time. Please arrive
at least 10 minutes prior to your scheduled audition
appointment. If you are unable to keep your audition appointment,
contact 412-403-0002 at least one
week in advance of your audition date.

Audition Preparation Tips
All auditions are by appointment only.

SCALE & SOLO REQUIREMENTS
Overture Strings (Entry Level)
NO AUDITION REQUIRED for Overture Strings,
only the completed
Prelude Ensembles (Intermediate Level)
Strings: Major scales (memorized) up to 3 sharps / 3 flats and two solos from
Suzuki Book 2 or equivalent. More advanced solos are encouraged.
To be considered for first violin, all scales must be two octaves and at least
one solo must demonstrate shifting proficiency.
Woodwinds & Brass: One octave chromatic scale & Major scales up to 3
sharps / 3 flats and solo(s) that demonstrate legato and staccato playing from
the solo or etude repertoire. All scales must be memorized.
Percussion: Scales up to 2 sharps / 2 flats C, F, G, Bb, D (memorized), Snare
solo or Etude of choice, plus Bell or Xylophone exercise or solo.
Philharmonic Orchestra (Advanced Level)
Violin: Three octave Major scales (memorized) up to 3 sharps / 3 flats. PMEA
required solo for 2016-17 and a second solo of choice.
Viola & Cello: Two or three octave Major scales (memorized) up to 3 sharps
/ 3 flats. PMEA required solo for 2016-17, and a second solo of choice.
String Bass: One octave C, G, D, & F Major scales (memorized). Gavotte in
G minor (Bach) and a second solo of choice.
Woodwinds: Major scales up to 5 sharps / 5 flats, 2 octave chromatic scale and
PMEA required solo for 2016-17. All scales must be memorized.
Brass: Major scales up to 4 sharps / 4 flats, 2 octave chromatic scale and PMEA
required solo for 2016-17. All scales must be memorized.
Percussion: Scales up to 3 Sharps / 3 Flats C, F, G, Bb, D, Eb, A (memorized),
Snare solo or Etude of choice,
Timpani exercise or solo, plus Bell or Xylophone solo.
