AUDITIONS (By Appointment Only)

2017-18 Audition Dates & Fees

SPRING, 2017 (Full Season):
Saturday, April 29, 2017 & Sunday, May 7, 2017

Spring Audition Fee $30
after April 1—$35; after April 15—$40
Spring Audition Registrations Close April 23, 2017.

SUMMER, 2017 (Full Season):
Tuesday, June 27, 2017 & Wednesday, June 28, 2017

Summer Audition Fee $30
after June 1—$35; after June 15—$40
Summer Audition Registrations Close June 21, 2017.

WINTER, 2018 (Half Season)†:
Saturday, January 13, 2018

Winter Audition Fee $30

Winter Audition Registrations Close January 7, 2018.

Students who audition in January for the Philharmonic Orchestra OR Prelude Ensembles are not eligible for seating auditions and will be placed in the back of their sections.

TO AUDITION:

1. Applicant must register online and reserve an Audition Appointment. PLEASE READ EACH LINK CAREFULLY, selecting the specific ensemble link below to register and schedule your Audition Appointment.

2. Auditions will last approximately ten minutes (Philharmonic Flute and ALL Percussion auditions are 20 minutes in length*.20-minute audition appointments are placed throughout the schedule. If a 20-minute appointment is not available on your preferred date, please call 412-609-2777.

3. Note separate link for parents registering multiple students, please click specific link below.

4. If you are unable to keep your audition appointment, call 412-609-2777 at least ONE WEEK prior to your audition.

5. Please arrive 10 minutes prior to your audition appointment.

6. Auditions are held at Chartiers Valley Intermediate School, 2030 Swallow Hill Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15220.

7. There are no piano-only auditions for PYPO Philharmonic Orchestra. Interested musician must audition and be accepted on another instrument, performing piano pieces as literature and Music Director dictates.

Audition Preparation Tips

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:

Please provide extra copy of solo(s) for adjudicator.
Sight reading is required in addition to the following scale & solo requirements.

SCALE & SOLO REQUIREMENTS:

PYPO OVERTURE STRINGS (Entry Level)

NO audition required. Admittance to Overture Strings requires completion of online registration, payment of appropriate fee(s), and completed teacher recommendation form which is available for download during registration.

PYPO PRELUDE ENSEMBLES (Intermediate Level)

Strings: Major scales up to 3 sharps / 3 flats and two solos from Suzuki Book 2 or equivalent. More advanced solos are encouraged. All scales must be memorized.
To be considered for first violin, all scales must be 2 octaves and at least one solo must demonstrate shifting proficiency.

Woodwinds: 1 octave chromatic scales plus:

  • Flute*, Oboe, Bassoon: Eb, Bb, F, C, G, D
  • Bb Clarinet, Bb Bass Clarinet, BbTenor Sax: F, C, G, D, A, E
  • Eb Alto & Eb Baritone Saxophone: C, G, D, A, E, B

AND solo(s) that demonstrate legato and staccato playing from the solo or etude repertoire. All scales must be memorized.
*If you have a piccolo, please bring to your audition and perform a scale.

Brass:
1 octave chromatic scales plus:

  • French Horn: Bb, F, C, G, D, A
    (Chromatic Scale starts on middle C)
  • Trumpets & Bb Treble Clef Baritone / Euphonium: F, C, G, D, A, E
    (Trumpet Chromatic Scale starts on D, bottom of staff)
  • Trombone, Bass Clef Baritone / Euphonium, Tuba: Eb, Bb, F, C, G, D
    (Trombone Chromatic Scale starts on second space C & Tuba starts on C two ledger lines below the staff)

AND solo(s) that demonstrate legato and staccato playing from the solo or etude repertoire. All scales must be memorized.

Percussion: Scales up to 2 sharps / 2 flats C, F, G, Bb, D,

AND Snare solo or Etude of choice, plus Bell or Xylophone exercise or solo. All scales must be memorized.

PYPO PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA (Advanced Level)

Violin: 3 octave Major scales (memorized) up to 3 sharps / 3 flats. PMEA required solo for 2017-18 and a second solo of choice.

Viola & Cello: 2 or 3 octave Major scales (memorized) up to 3 sharps / 3 flats. PMEA required solo for 2017-18, and a second solo of choice.

String Bass:
1 octave C, G, D, & F Major scales (memorized). L’elephant from Carnival of the Animals (Saint Saens), and a second solo of choice.

Woodwinds:
2 octave Major scales up to 5 sharps / 5 flats, 3 octave chromatic scale and PMEA required solo for 2017-18. All scales must be memorized.

Flutes: Must also audition on Piccolo. 3 octave chromatic scale starting on Bb, and Solo: Sonata in F for Flute and Piano (first mvmt. - Allegro), Telemann.\

Brass: Major scales up to 4 sharps / 4 flats, 2 octave chromatic scale and PMEA required solo for 2017-18. All scales must be memorized.

Percussion:
Scales up to 3 Sharps / 3 Flats C, F, G, Bb, D, Eb, A (memorized), Snare solo or Etude of choice, Timpani exercise or solo, plus Bell or Xylophone solo.

Note: The audition requirements listed are the minimum required for entrance and being able to meet these requirements will not guarantee an applicant's acceptance.

Our music staff will select applicants who can play at the level of students currently in each ensemble. The different levels represented by the orchestra and ensemble are intended to help each student grow at his or her own pace as a player and musician. However, students exhibiting skills above the current PYPO Prelude Ensemble will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis by the adjudication panel and Music Director for part-time, or full admission into the Pittsburgh Youth Philharmonic Orchestra
